Thinking of Getting Hair Extensions? Read This First!

We all dream of having long, lucious, healthy hair, but not all of us are able to grow our own natural locks into a style that looks thick, glossy, and turns heads out of envy. This is an unfortunate fact, but a fact all the same. There are of course ways to turn this around, but that doesn’t mean you should jump into any of them without thinking carefully.

Hair extensions are something which we all consider at least once, but many of us don’t go through with it because we are worried about the chances of damage to our own natural hair. Yes, this can happen, but only if the wrong hairdresser works on your hair, choosing the wrong style and method for your actual hair type. For instance, heavy extensions are not going to do anything particularly positive for a person who has thin hair!

If you’re still considering whether to go for it or not, let’s check out the pros and cons of hair extensions, to give you more information on which to make your choice.

Pros of Hair Extensions

  • You can add instant length to your hair, without having to wait for it to grow
  • You can change your hair colour without having to add harsh chemicals to your locks
  • You will have an instantly dramatic change to your appearance
  • There will be no damage to your natural hair, provided you choose the right method and type of hair, and you ask a quality hairdresser to do the extensions for you
  • The extensions will blend naturally into your hair, when done correctly

Cons of Hair Extensions

  • Hair extensions are not cheap, and can be very expensive. You will need to pay more if you want to achieve quality results, without damage – cutting corners is not recommended
  • You will need to maintain your extensions, and possibly use specialist products
  • At first, it will take you a lot more time to style your hair, as you get used to having more of it, and a longer length
  • The extensions will feel heavy at first, and may cause a headache for a day or two – this will go away however
  • Extensions can damage your hair if not done correctly, so shopping around and researhing the subject is vital

There are different types of hair extensions, and different types of hair. The main types of hair include:

  • Synthetic (the cheapest)
  • Non-remy hair
  • Low quality remy hair
  • High quality remy hair
  • Virgin remy hair

There are also different ways to attach the extensions to your hair:

  • Clip in
  • Sew in
  • Tape in
  • Fusion
  • Microbead

A high quality hairdresser is going to cost you more money, but they will do a thorough consultation on your hair type, and advise you on which options are best for you.
