Fork and Grind: The Best Cafe in Ultimo!

As we have all experienced, finding the right coffee place to get you through the work week is like finding $50 dollars on the ground; rare and a pure delight. The Beauty News team is always in need of good coffee, and with so many cafes to choose from, we have become the coffee connoisseurs of the Ultimo area. In our quest for the superior coffee, we have come to develop three crucial criteria to what makes a cafe good:

  1. Consistently perfect-made coffee
  2. Delicious food
  3. Very reasonable pricing

After trying every cafe within walking distance in Ultimo, we have found the key stand out amongst all the rest, which has met all three criteria… Fork and Grind located on the corner of Jones Street and Mary Ann Street.

Owned by brothers Alex and Michael, Fork and Grind is a boutique cafe that offers a wide range of food and beverages. Established 5 years ago, Fork and Grind was named after a clever play on words, and all built up from scratch by the two brothers. The cafe has a small and cozy atmosphere which is both inviting and comforting to newcomers and regulars.

Now most importantly, let’s talk about the food. We decided to order a wide variety to get a greater perspective on what they offer. We chose a large mixed salad (chicken pesto pasta salad, greek salad, falafel + couscous salad and mediterranean roasted veggie salad), classic fish and chips, beef tower burger with chips, corn fritters with bacon and avocado, and finally, Nutella pancakes, all to share. To wash it down, we ordered a range of their freshly made juices and a chocolate milkshake.

I don’t know many cafes where everything I’ve ordered has been delicious, but Fork and Grind really has delivered and there was not a single mouthful the Beauty News team didn’t enjoy. Amongst us it was hard to pick a favourite, but in the end we decided the Nutella pancakes were too heavenly.

After enjoying our wonderful meal, we hung back to chat to owners Alex and Michael to see how they have kept their business running during the Covid-19 pandemic. Like all cafes, they have experienced economic hardship, closing down their doors at the beginning of Sydney’s lockdown for a month. Once restrictions eased and they were able to reopen, the cafe has slowly started to return to some normalcy. The fresh and friendly cafe has welcomed back its customers and we can happily report Fork and Grind is full of lively banter again.

You can view their menu here, they also offer catering services for all your office party needs!
