Shopping mindfully can’t necessarily save the planet, but it can result in lifestyle changes inspiring others to do the same. With our world getting increasingly warmer, it is time to start tweaking our carbon footprint and no longer turning a blind eye to global warming. If you haven’t heard of it already, meet Reformation, a women’s clothing and accessories label keen on combining sustainable practices with design in an effort to use fashion to reflect both women’s feminine figure and the beauty of our world.
Here are 3 reasons to remain inspired by Reformation’s brand-mission:
1. Their slogan is bold- proving fashion can have purpose
“Being naked is the #1 most sustainable option. We’re #2.”
Reformation’s slogan doesn’t just exist for the irony, but is a driving force that remains true in how the clothing brand makes conscious decisions when it comes to the environment. Reformation believes in considering all the costs of fashion rather than just the price tags. And they work to continually prove it. Comparing their clothes to conventional ones, their most recent 2017 report shows Reformation to have left a waste footprint of less than half the average clothing brand, a water usage footprint of just about one third of the average clothing brand and a carbon footprint of far less than half the average clothing brand.
2. Their jeans are changing the name of the game
Reformation practices what it preaches. Jeans are one of the most polluting fashion items, but also one of the most popular. Seeing this being a problem, Reformation decided to tackle it head on. Through the process of offsetting, replacing resources spent, one pair of Ref Jeans saves approximately 1,468 gallons of water in comparison to one conventional pair. Making up for lost time, for every pair of Ref Jeans purchased, the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) Water Restoration Program cleans an additional thousand gallons of water. Worth it, right? And the jeans are pretty cute too.
3. Reformation encourages us to see for ourselves
Reformation has implemented a RefScale, tracking the environmental footprint for each and every clothing piece sold by the brand. This allows customers to see for themselves the environmental impact of what they are wearing. Reformation also displays yearly sustainability reports, providing us with transparent, accessible and thorough data answering doubts, confusions and helping us to better understand how Reformation strives to do better when it comes to climate change. (Reformation’s sustainability report for 2018 should be launching soon.)
From growing to manufacturing to selling, Reformation is constantly exploring the potential of sustainable fashion in the 21st century. They are a brand committed to making the systematic changes that they believe are the start to impacting the world at a systemic level. Let’s thank our earth by wearing it the right way, without compromising style.
