All those drinks on Saturday night seemed like a good idea at the time, but now your are lying in bed regretting your drunk self’s choices. You’ve received a visit from your unwelcome friend… ‘the hangover’. To get a little technical, a hangover is caused by toxic chemicals entering into your body. These chemicals like to leave you dehydrated, having a dry mouth and feeling nauseous and dizzy. Hangovers are inevitable and you’re just going to have to wait for them to go away, but there are some ways to speed up the process.
H20
Drink water… and lots of it. This is because once you pass the tipsy stage, your body goes into overdrive and makes you feel like you need to go to the toilet a lot more regularly AKA ‘breaking the seal’. Daniel K. Hall-Flavin, M.D recommends drinking a glass of water with every beer you have and alternate between alcohol and water to not have that miserable hangover the next morning.
Coconut water
Coconut water helps you absorb more water into your body and stay hydrated particularly because your body has flushed away electrolytes and vitamins. It reduces the feeling of ‘dry mouth’ and dehydration and one carton of this stuff can put your daily intake of potassium back into your body.
Hangover remedy cocktails
Yes, you’re not that drunk that you read that wrong, we did say cocktails. However, these ones are sure to make you feel better not worse.
Fruit and Stuff
- 1 banana
- 1 small can V-8
- 6 large strawberries
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1-2 cups milk (or soy milk), to desired consistency
- ¼ tsp. salt
- dash of nutmeg
Mix together in a blender and drink!
Bloody Mary (Hangover edition)
- 1.5 oz vodka
- Dash of lemon (or lime) juice
- Worcestershire sauce
- 2 or 3 drops Tabasco sauce
- Pepper, salt and celery salt
- 5 oz tomato juice
Mix together and enjoy!
Eat
Food slows down the absorption of alcohol so before a big night out, fill your stomachs with any sort of food. You’ll be thanking yourself in the morning after.
Vitamins
They say supplements such as Vitamin A, B, and D tablets/capsules are beneficial because your body gets rid of all the vitamins you had previously. This method actually works and makes you feel slightly better because your body is now absorbing vitamins that are good for your body to fight the nasty chemicals you put in your body that night. A banana, which is high in potassium and has natural sugars will also make your nausea and headache go away slightly.
