Essential tips to protect your skin

Good skin habits start early. Remember the days when you were just a lost teenager trying to figure out which face cream to use and how to get rid of unwanted spots?

Times have changed since then. There are so many options and product available, and professional advice seems to be everywhere. The abundancy of choice is sometimes making it even harder to quickly find what fits our skin type. That is why testing is crucial. Keep testing products until you find the right ones.

However, the basics never change. For any product to work, skin should be clean, prepared and fresh.

Cleanse daily

No amount of fancy, expensive or organic product can benefit your skin unless the active ingredients in it can actually penetrate into deeper skin layers. For everyday routine, find gentle cleansers and use them day and night. If you are unsure which ones to use, ask for samples or buy mini packages. That way, you can test how your skin reacts to certain products and see what fits you best. Use good quality masks, scrubs and serums. Use them as advised, depending on your skin’s needs.

Always remember that what works for your best friend may not work for you.

Have regular facials

A good dermatologist or a beautician is your new best friend. Search for one until you find it. And once you find it, don’t let go. Regular facials are essential, regardless of your skin type. They will help you deeply clean the skin, get rid of blackheads, pimples and dead cells. A good therapist will make a thorough assessment of your skin type and use adequate products. Try different facials depending on the season – winter winds can dry and dehydrate our face leading to a stronger hydration treatment, while summers can cause sun burns and increase sensitivity, and therefore a more soothing one would be in place. Ideally, have facials once a month or once every two months. As we get older, our skin needs more care and a careful customized approach.

Use sunscreen

And we mean it. Use sunscreen every day, even in winter. Face is exposed to harmful sun rays every time you step out of the house. A thin layer of light sunscreen under your daily cream will help with hydration and protect you from the sun. Use creams with high SPF and don’t forget other exposed areas like the neck, arms, hands and similar.

No junk food

The food we eat has a major impact on how we feel and look. Junk food is full of unhealthy fats, extra salt and white sugar. It can make your skin react and make come conditions even worse. Focus on healthier options – use olive oil and lemon as salad dressings, eat dark instead of milk chocolate and make almonds, berries and nuts your new snacking options.
