How You Can Start a Zero-Waste Beauty Routine

Zero-waste means producing zero trash. From the plastic wrapping of packaging to non-recyclable bottles and toothbrushes, so much of our every-day skin routine produces rubbish.

Did you know that each year the world disposes of 5 BILLION toothbrushes? Hygiene is important but how can we change our habits to improve our environment and our impact on the earth?

Here are some of our tips to change your beauty routine and a few zero-waste products that we love!

1. Swap out single-use products

Single-use products are terrible for the environment! They may only be used for a few minutes, but their impact on the environment can last thousands of years! So what can you do instead? Actively search for alternative products that are reusable, compostable or recyclable and share your new found products with friends and family so they too can help to make a difference.

Flora & Fauna Bamboo Toothbrush

Bamboo toothbrushes are a great substitute for single-use toothbrushes. Made from biodegradable and recyclable materials, Flora & Fauna’s toothbrush range is an amazing zero-waste alternative.

Elate Refresh Foundation

With the plant-derived formula and recyclable, compostable packaging, Elate’s Refresh Foundation is a great alternative to the masses of plastic, chemical-based foundations that flood our market.

2. Use washable cloths

Rather than using disposable wipes or cotton pads, opt for a reusable washable cloth to clean off your makeup and wash your face. Less trash is one of the easiest ways to reduce your environmental footprint and be more sustainable!

Marley’s Monsters Reusable Organic Cotton Wipes

Made from 100% organic cotton, these wipes are super soft on your skin. Use them to clean off your makeup and simply put them in the wash and they’re ready for you to use again!

3. Recycle and say ‘no’ to packaging

From plastic films to non-recyclable boxes, a lot of products we purchase have unnecessary single-use packaging. Instead choose products that don’t use packaging or instead use recyclable, compostable packaging and find ways to reduce the amount of packaging you consume.

Lush Shampoo Bar

With ingredients that clean, invigorate and soothe your hair, Lush’s shampoo bars are the perfect zero-waste alternative to liquid shampoo. Why not buy a Lush conditioner bar as well?

Wanderlightly Vegan Deodorant Balm

Wanderlightly has created a vegan and cruelty-free deodorant balm that neutralises odours whilst creating zero-waste with its compostable and 100% recyclable paper tubes.

River Organics Vegan Lip Balm

River Organics have developed a plant-based, cruelty-free lip balm to moisturise and protect your lips. Encased in an eco-friendly paper tube, this makeup product is a zero-waste lip balm and a great addition to your makeup collection.

4. Shift your mindset!

Changing your routine can be hard but you can make it easier by opening yourself to a new way of looking at things! Having a zero-waste beauty routine starts with the want to change.

Caring for and protecting our environment is more important than ever. So why not change your beauty routine with these simple alternatives and tips to create a zero-waste lifestyle!
