Thinking of getting a boob job? Here is everything you need to know about the recovery!

We know that the most daunting aspect of a breast augmentation can be the thought of recovery, but that doesn’t have to be the case as we see many patients return to their normal activities daily around the first week or sooner! We got the inside scoop from Dr Shaz and Dr Mark Kohout, leading surgeons at Australia Cosmetic Clinics, on what a typical recovery looks like, so you can be prepared on what to expect after your surgery.

Post- OP

Immediately after your surgery, the anaesthetic will still be in your system so you may feel groggy or nauseous, that is why it is recommended to sleep off the effects for a couple hours after the augmentation. Many patients don’t complain of any pain after the surgery due to the anaesthetic still being in their system, however, the mild-moderate pain will kick in a few hours after surgery. It’s important to also make arrangements for someone to care for you, as you will not be able to drive and will need help for getting dressed and meals.

1-7 Days

This is the most difficult part of the surgery as some patients experience pain, discomfort and tightness in the chest area, which expected after a breast augmentation. During this period it’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions closely and take your prescribed medication as directed, as this will ensure you experience a safe and hassle-free recovery. Some important instructions to follow are:
-Sleeping upright

-Wearing your surgical bra and compression bands

-Avoid lifting your arms above your head

-Avoid heavy lifting or any vigorous movement

1-6 weeks

After the one week mark, it is recommended to get back into your routine. Activities such as work and light movement are safe to resume. During this time you should be improving each day and feeling more comfortable with the implants, if you’re still experiencing severe pain you should consult your doctor. It is also important to continue following your doctor’s instructions, which include massaging the area to prevent capsular contracture and assist lymphatic drainage.

Full Recovery

The following months after your surgery, you will begin to see the full results of your breast augmentation. Your breasts will settle into their natural position and should drop slightly to the perfect position on your chest, the scars will also begin to fade if they are properly cared for. During this time, you should also be able to resume upper body workouts and vigorous activities. It’s also important to touch base with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
