Is Microdermabrasion The Answer to Your Skincare Prayers?

Is Microdermabrasion The Answer to Your Skincare Prayers?

For years we have been searching for the magic elixir which will give us soft, youthful-looking skin, and rid us of any conditions which might cause the appearance to be anything other than canvas-like. We’re still looking, but there are encouraging signs to suggest we might be getting closer.

Have you heard of microdermabrasion? You probably have, it’s been around since the 1990s, and has long been a staple on many a salon’s treatment list. The thing is, microdermabrasion is more accessible than ever before, with at home machines offering the same level of treatment, for a fraction of the long-term price. When you throw in the fact that the results of microdermabrasion are pretty impressive, you can understand why so many people are making a machine investment and avoiding the salon altogether!

If you’re not sure if microdermabrasion is an option for you, let’s explore what it is, and what particular conditions and issues it helps with.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is nothing like its more aggressive cousin, dermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is suitable for most skin types and can help with a wide variety of different conditions (more on that shortly). It doesn’t hurt, it doesn’t require any downtime, no anaesthetics requires, and it’s nowhere near as invasive as treatments like Botox.

Microdermabrasion is administered via a machine and it works in a two phase way. The first phase is a deep exfoliation of the top layer of the skin, clearing out unblocked skin, waving goodbye to skin cells which have seen better days, and boosting circulation and new nutrients to the area. Of course, this also boosts collagen and elastin production, which we need for that anti-aging boost. The second phase is a suction device to suck away the debris and old skin cells which the first phase has loosened. This all leaves behind a more youthful, glowing, and even skin tone.

Sounds great, right?

What Conditions Can Microdermabrasion Help With?

You don’t necessarily have to have a skin condition per se to be able to have microdermabrasion. If you simply want to go down the anti-aging route, or you want to brighten up a dull skin tone, you can easily use microdermabrasion for that, no problems. However, there are certain conditions which benefit from this treatment:

  • Skin which is prone to blackhead breakouts
  • Mild (superficial) acne scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Stretchmarks (yes, you can use it on your body too!)
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage

Several well-spaced out microdermabrasion treatments could be the answer to your skincare prayers, and if you don’t want to keep going to the salon on a regular basis, you could invest in an at home machine and do it all yourself. These are much easier to use than ever before, and have a wide range of features to create a bespoke treatment, for your specific skin type and requirements.
