How to French Tuck like a Pro

Do you ever wear a jumper and feel like it’s a little too frumpy, chunky and unflattering? Never fear, the French tuck is here!

Thanks to Mr Tan France from Netflix series, Queer Eye, the French tuck is making a comeback. The makeover show’s fashion expert casually dropped this intriguing term during the franchise’s second series. In doing so, he sparked somewhat of a fashion phenomenon.

You might be thinking, “What the heck is a french tuck?” A French tuck is a fancy way of describing what it looks like when you only half-tuck in your shirt. But, deliberately.

According to Tan, fixing yourself a French tuck is the easiest way to:

  1. Fake the effortlessly chic air of a Parisian.
  2. Balance your proportions and look taller and leaner (thanks to drawing in your waist).
  3. Feel ‘pulled together’ and jazz up your outfit.

How do you French tuck?
This French tuck is simple. Like, ridiculously simple.

All you need to do is tuck the front-middle part of your top into the front of your bottoms and leave the back floating in the wind. See, very simple! As with anything, practice makes perfect when figuring out how much top you should tuck. This can also help to determine how much tuck is most flattering for your shape.

For example, if you have a straight-up-and-down shape, a dramatic French tuck can create the illusion of a waist, whereas a more draped French tuck is great if you want coverage over your tummy area, without wearing the shirt completely out.

How to wear the French tuck

The best thing about this trend is the fact that you can do this look with basically any top/bottom combination.

To prove that, here are some options for you to try the French tuck:

  • A loose t-shirt tucked into a high waisted skirt.
  • A crisp button up tucked into skinny jeans
  • An oversized knit tucked into pants or a skirt to create shape at the waist
  • A floaty blouse tucked in to soften the hemline/draw attention to a snazzy belt

I guess people have been tucking their shirts in for years, but Tan was the first person to give it a name, and a fancy name at that. Ever since season 2 of Queer Eye dropped in June, #frenchtuck has been trending on Instagram.

People all over the world are sharing their photos with their french tucks, and look how bloody great they look with their fancy shirt tucks.
