Australia’s Best Wine Regions

If you’re like me you love a good glass of wine. But what constitutes a good glass or bottle of wine you might ask. Well it could be the year, the region, the grape or even how many awards it has received. For some it could be one of the four, but usually it would have to be the region. 

Some people take preference to a particular region, mostly overseas like France or Italy. But in Australia we have some amazing wine regions that even rival those overseas. You may have even heard of them. Here are some of Australia’s best wine regions.

New South Wales

The Southern Highlands wine region in NSW is often overlooked, which is a real shame. The region is home to some amazing wines like Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Arneis, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and even Gewurztraminer. Pair these amazing wines with the breathtaking scenery and you’ll have a match made in heaven. Some wineries to look out for are Southern Highlands Winery, Centennial Vineyards and Joadja Estate

 

Orange

Possibly one of the newest and most exciting wine regions in NSW would have to be the Orange region. The region is being discovered and rediscovered, as it has had potential for a long time now with its perfect altitude and climate for wine making. The region makes the classic white wine varieties like Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. As well as red wine varieties like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Some wineries in Orange you should check out are Borrodell Estate, Nashdale Lane and De Salis Wines.

 

Hunter Valley

This is possibly the most famous wine region in NSW. You’re probably lying if you say you’ve never heard of it. It is also the oldest wine region in Australia dating back to 1820’s. The region draws local and international wine lovers through the year. All eagerly wanting to sample varieties like Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Verdelho from the region’s renowned wineries. This region also offers amazing local food to pair with your wine. Some places to definitely visit are Brokenwood Wines, Krinklewood Biodynamic Vineyard and Gartelmann Wines.

South Australia

Just like NSW has the Hunter valley, South Australia has the Barossa Valley. This Wine region is well known both here and overseas. The area boasts a history dating back more than 170 years and is home to some of Australia’s oldest surviving vines. The region has more than 150 wineries and 80 cellar doors with plenty of varieties to sample. These include Moorooroo Park Vineyards, Tscharke and Hayes Family Wines.

 

McLaren Vale

The region is known for its innovative drops and its many world-renowned wineries such as Wirra Wirra, Hardys Tintara and McLaren Vale. d’Arenberg Winery. The region is known for its Rich Italian roots and matching Mediterranean climate. This allows the region to produce crisp white varieties like Vermentino and Fiano alongside Australian classic red wines like Grenache and Shiraz. 

 

Kangaroo Island

When you think of wine, some might not think of Kangaroo Island. But with its Mediterranean climate the wineries here are able to produce intensely flavoured wine varieties. Along with experimental red blends and other award-winning wines there is a lot on offer here. From tasty Cabernet Blends and flavourful Shiraz to vibrant Chardonnay there’s something for every wine lover. Why not try Bay of Shoals vineyard and Kangaroo Island Estate

 

Tasmania

The Tamar Valley is home to several wineries that show off the best of the region. The valley uses Tasmania’s climate and soil to its advantage to make some of the best Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and sparkling wines in the country. Not only do the wineries like Pipers Brook Winery, Swinging Gate Vineyard to name a few, make some of the best wine but they also offer some of the best scenery to look at while tasting them.

 

Derwent Valley

The valley is home to more than 20 vineyards which all take advantage of the rich and fertile land on offer here. These wineries include Derwent Estate Vineyard, Laurel Bank Vineyard and Moorilla Winery to name a few. The valley showcases its specialties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and many more.

 

Coal River Valley

The Coal River Valley is drier than other wine regions in Tasmania. However this is not a negative but in fact a positive as it is a great environment for aromatic varieties, particularly later ripening wines. Wineries like Coal Valley Vineyard, Pages Creek, Nocton Park and many more also offer the classics like Cabernet Sauvignon and more.

Victoria

The Yarra Valley is Victoria’s oldest wine region, dating back to 1838. The Region boasts over 70 wineries with many world-class drops available. Among these wineries is the De Bortoli winery, The Fergusson winery and the TarraWarra Estate winery. The Yarra Valley produces world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as well as sparkling Fontaine Rosé. There really is something for everyone here, whether it be wine, food or both.

 

Mornington Peninsula

With its rolling hills and ocean views the Mornington Peninsula is well known but it should also be known for its amazing wine and wineries. The Peninsula is home to more than 50 cellar doors and wineries like the Montalto winery, the Ten Minutes by Tractor winery and the jackalope winery. All offering Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Pinot Gris and even Pinot Grigio and many more. 

 

Swan Hill

This region is renowned for its plentiful produce and fertile agriculture as most of the region is nestled close to the banks of the Murray river. With many wineries like Tellurian Wines, Andrew Peace Wines and many more. All taking advantage of the Mediterranean climate to produce many award winning wines. The regional produce of Pinot Gris, Shiraz and Chardonnay as well as Cabernet Sauvignon. 

Queensland

This region features many boutique wineries and vineyards such as Sarabah Estate Vineyard, Cedar Creek Estate to name a few. The wineries here take advantage of the cooler climate of Mt Tamborine and the milder climates of Albert River and Canungra Valley which allows a diverse range of grape varieties to be grown here. All of which produce premium award winning wines such as Merlot, Rosé, Cardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and many more. 

 

Granite Belt

The unusually cool Granite Belt climate and free-draining sandy soils are used by many wineries to produce many favorite wine varieties. Vineyards and wineries like Golden Grove Estate Vineyard and Winery and Ballandean Estate Wines use these conditions to produce varieties that include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot as well as Verdelho and Viognier.

 

Somerset Valley

The first wine grapes were planted in the Somerset region in the 1800s by European settlers. Since then the region has been known to offer many varieties as well as many of the classics like Viognier, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Ruby Cabernet. The region is dotted with many cellar doors and wineries like Ocean View Estates, Somerset Vineyard & Winery and Winya Wines.

Western Australia

The Swan Valley is Australia’s most historic wine region. The valley was originally settled by southern and eastern Europeans, who brought fortified wines and traditional winemaking techniques to Swan valley. Warm-climate Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Chenin Blanc, and Verdelho are still made today at the many cellar doors and vineyards. These include Albion On Swan, Fig Tree Estate Winery and many more.

Western Australia is known for producing some of the most elegant wines in the country and the Margaret River is partly responsible for this. It is the most famous wine region in WA, it is also made up of six subregions with over 100 wineries like Vasse Felix Vineyard, Voyager Estate Vineyard and Leeuwin Estate Vineyard to name a few. Making the region famous for its many grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz plus more.

The great southern is Australia’s largest wine region. The region’s many wineries like Ducketts Mill, Castelli Estate and Abbey Creek vineyard have a reputation for producing fine, cool climate wines. These include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. 

With so many vineyards and cellar doors literally in our backyard, you’d be crazy not to visit some for yourself. No matter if you drink white wine or red wine, our amazing wine regions have something for everyone.
