Of course, prevention is the easiest way to avoid sunburn and with so many reputable brands, a good sunscreen is usually readily available. However, at one point or another we have failed to re-apply or use it at all and have suffered the consequences of a beastly burn.
Most of the time sunburns are only mild and can be treated at home with natural or store bought remedies. In this article we are going to share with you everything you need to know about treating a sunburn.
Cool down
Gently apply a damp cloth to the skin to control the sting and cool down the affected area. You may also like to take a cold shower or bath, but be mindful of harsh soaps that could irritate the skin further.
Apply aloe vera
Aloe vera has been a natural remedy for sunburns for years. The plant produces antioxidants and antibacterial properties that work together to combat inflammation and promote healing.
Whilst fresh aloe vera is best for sunburns, it is perfectly fine to purchase an aloe vera gel instead. Just be sure to avoid anything that includes alcohol or dyes as they can further dry out the skin and cause more damage. For an even more intense cooling effect, we recommend popping it in the fridge for a couple of hours prior to application.
To use fresh aloe vera on a burn all you need to do is:
- Cut a large leaf from the plant
- Peel back the outer skin on one side
- Gently rub the leaf’s juice all over the burn
Store bought products should have directions of use on them.

Stay hydrated
This may not come as a surprise, but it is important to drink plenty of water when you are sunburnt. Extra hydration will help care for and keep skin producing hyaluronic acid.
Water, gatorade and coconut water are best!
Apply a moisturiser
Sunburn can dry out the skin and lead to peeling. The best way to reduce these effects is by applying a good moisturiser twice daily, especially after showering.
