Michael Brown’s Winter Hair Styling Tips

Michael Brown is known as the go-to-guy for everything beauty! As an ambassador for VS Sassoon, he has given us his top selection of VS Sassoon products to help you create the best looks this winter. So let’s hand it over to the expert and his top Winter styling tips!

The cooler months ahead can be good for the hair – less sun damage, sweat and dryness by environmental factors or a good dip in chlorine or salt water (and don’t even get me started about humidity).

So while we may enjoy a little break for our hair in winter, it’s important to note that we may not be rocking that sea-salt beachy hair vibe with max texture, instead we usually focus on polished and sleek heat styling, which is again, drying for the hair – it never ends. We generally don’t ‘air-dry’ hair as much in winter, simply because it’s colder and who likes cold, wet hair? Hair dryers are dusted off to blast hair dry as fast as we can, maybe with a wave for a bit of fun, but then we have a lot of sleek looks that may require some straightening…

Let’s talk hair protection, as the health of our hair is just step 1 of styling this winter.

1. When we dry our hair, it’s important to know what works best to tame the mane.

A traditional hair dryer is for those who may require a little more than your average dry. The VS Sassoon 5Q Brilliance High Performance Dryer ($129.95) comes with two attachments – one concentrator that gives direct air flow to the hair for directional styling, smoothing and straightening and one diffuser perfect for naturally curler hair to avoid frizz and separation of curls, drying them in-tact, both fir a frizz-free result. Different temperature controls allow every hair type to enjoy their best dry and a cold shot button to focus on a particular style.

2. For someone who likes to blast dry, brush dry and/or volume dry their hair, the on-trend blow dry brushes can be an easy at-home salon quality styling tool to help create sleek winter styles for healthy smooth locks.

The VS Sassoon Air Style Brilliance ($169.95) comes with 7 attachments, all to dry, smooth, give volume or create texture, perfect for quick convenient styles on cold winter mornings. Blast hair dry with the Concentrator attachment – either through hair for texture and volume, or on top of hair sections to lock cuticles and smooth. The blow-dry paddle brush is amazing for general smoothing & de-tangling, but as there is heat from the dryer, hair relaxes into a sleek look in minutes. The very popular volume blow-out attachment is a great winter accessory to use under the hair, rotating from roots to ends, creating lift and volume all while protecting hair with the ceramic coated 64mm paddle brush. Use this especially at the top & crown of the head for extra volume – a great face framer and general shaping of your head.

3. For super smooth and sleek looks you want to close the hair cuticles and straighten hair to be in perfect condition, but often high heat can cause more damage than good.

Temperature controls are a must for individual hair health and quality, giving less damage by going a lower heat for hair that is weak, brittle and highly coloured and only using high heat settings if hair is not damaged and usually on the thicker side. The VS Sassoon Steam Straight Brilliance ($199.95) is literally brilliant in creating a healthy and shiny sleek straight look to any hair condition with multiple heart settings and the steam element. Whether it’s straightening sections to pull back into a sleek up-do, or generally getting rid of that summer texture and going silky straight, the steam as well as the wide ceramic plates will give any hair the look of super healthy shine. A trend-worthy tip is to rotate the straightener inwards on the lower ends of each section to a create an under-flick to hair – super playful yet chic.

4. Winter can also be fun and sleek with hair looks… Yes, we love the textured beachy waves, but there is something about a sleek and smooth wave through the hair – one that lasts is even better.

The VS Sassoon Cool Curl Brilliance ($149.95) is extremely unique, as the outer barrel has a fan to cool the visible chambers so as you use the tool exactly how you would to create a curl with a straightener, hair first passes through the ceramic plates to bend and manipulate hair into a wave pattern, then as you rotate your hands and the tool moves down the hair, it passes over the cooling outer chamber to set – magic. Cooling hair after a curl to set (and to also assist in better hair health) is nothing new, but having it weaved into the tool, cooling after heating with every pass is quick and easy. For those that like to change up their wave style, pass through hair with tool slowly for a curl and faster for a softer wave – always brush or wide-tooth comb after to give a complete look.
