Everything you need to know about tackling “Man Boobs”

Is your boyfriend self conscious in the bedroom? Is he a handful in more ways than one?

If so, he could be suffering from Gynecomastia, also known as “Man-boobs”. This is a common concern that makes many men feel uncomfortable taking their shirt off, especially coming up to the beach season! If this sounds like your S.O, don’t worry he’s not alone! We sat down with Dr Mark Kohout to find out more about the surgical options.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a common issue that occurs in approximately 40 to 60% of men. It can either affect one breast or it can affect both but be asymmetrical in size. It commonly occurs during puberty under the influence of a hormonal surge or later in life as a result of fluctuating weight. Often, it is both: a combination of breast gland tissue and fat tissue.

Noticing an increase in breast tissue when you’re a man cannot only be an embarrassing condition, but it can also be painful and uncomfortable. It can be extremely disappointing after successfully losing a large amount of weight, only to be left with “man boobs” that can affect your confidence and appearance.

Is Gynecomastia surgery right for me?

There are some important factors to consider when deciding your options, as they may implicate your eligibility or results of your surgery. Generally, if you are over 18 and are healthy, you should be fit for gynecomastia surgery.  The operation takes around 90 minutes and is normally done in a day surgery setting.

Does Liposuction Solve the Issue?

A good surgeon would consider not only what is effective but what would be the best option aesthetically. The issue may be caused by not only an increase in fat but also an enlargement of glandular tissue, which must be removed surgically. Sometimes, liposuction is all that is required, but more commonly, you get a better result with removing the excess breast tissue as well. Gynecomastia correction gives a stable, long-lasting result unless you gain weight or take steroid-type drugs or hormones.
