Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have opened up about the nature of their relationship as sisters, business partners and creators, in a rare interview with the Wall Street Journal.
The sisters started their American fashion label The Row in 2006. Applying a low-key press strategy when advertising their brand, the Olsen’s attracted a loyal customer base who appreciated their blend of minimalistic style with luxury fabrics.
“We’re not product pushers,” Ashley explains. “I don’t know if it’s because of the way we grew up—we just don’t like talking about ourselves or talking about what we’re doing…It’s not really our approach.”
After working so closely with one another as fashion designers, the sisters discuss how they have continued to maintain their strong relationship.
“It’s been 32 years of learning how to communicate,” Ashley notes. Their relationship is “a marriage and a partnership. We have had ups and downs. We do everything together.”
“We came out of the womb doing that,” adds Mary-Kate.
The latest project that the Olsen sisters have released is their first ever menswear collection. The need for this collection was “prompted by customers, friends and family who frequently asked, ‘When are you starting it? Where can I find it?’”
Dropping in October, this new line will reflect “the precise minimal masculine style of New York.” Materials have been sourced from the best manufacturers in Japan, France, and Italy, to ensure the quality of the clothes being produced.
