The Japanese Face Routine You Should Definitely Try

If you’re running late once again after spending all of your time trying to blend out the contouring that you so religiously apply, why not try out the newest Japanese makeup trend?

The current Japanese trend is all about looking youthful. Steer away from heavy set foundation and contouring, and try to keep it natural. This Japanese trend is all about enhancing ones  beauty, not covering it up. And it seems as if the West is moving towards the trend of the “natural” as well, as the bushy brow and glowy look are taking our Instagram feeds by storm.

Back to Basics

First of all, it is important that your base is in a perfect state as the Japanese go for clear, bright and hydrated skin. If the canvas is perfect, you won’t have to use much product to smoothen it out. Unlike the Korean skincare routine that has eleven steps, the Japanese routine has only six (yay for sleeping in!)

The first step is removing all the dirt and makeup that might still be hanging around. This is often done with an oil cleanser (I like to use the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil), followed by a foam cleanser.

The next step is using toner which tightens the pores and may carry other benefits. Purchase one that is catered towards your skin type and see your skin problems diminish. Next, use an essence or lotion which re-hydrates your skin and locks in the moisture. One of my favourites is the Hada Labo hyaluronic acid which keeps my skin nice and plump. You might use a serum after this step to add in some extra care, but skipping is an option (If you’re anything like me).

Lastly (and most importantly), we finish with a moisturiser, hydrating your thirsty skin a bit more. In this case, Japanese people often opt for a more gel-like consistency as there are already a few layers on their face. Often Japanese people follow up with some sunscreen, but you could also purchase a moisturiser that contains SPF. This has the benefit of adding some extra protection. Gently tap on some eye cream, as your skin is the thinnest around this area.

Now that this is out of the way, you might have noticed that they often have dewy skin. One cause is their rigorous skincare routine, the other is their simple makeup routine. To achieve an all natural, dewy finish, only apply tinted moisturiser and concealer in the places necessary.

Turn That Frown Upside Down

When you scroll through Instagram you’ll encounter a lot of stylised eyebrows à la Kardashian, thick and lovely. However, against the Western natural bushy arched eyebrows stand the straight eyebrows from Japan. This straightness gives off an innocent vibe, playing into the youthful look that they adore.

If this isn’t up your alley, add a slight curve to achieve a similar look.

You Lookin’ at Me?

While keeping it natural is a must, Japanese women lay focus on the eyes– drawing attention to them. One way is to use brightly coloured eyeshadows such as orange, pink or turquoise, and add another bright element through your eyeliner or mascara.

You could also use peachy or pink colours, making the look a bit more romantic.

They also use coloured lenses, but if you can’t put anything in your eyes (like me), you can just leave ‘em.

You Make Me Blush

To achieve that youthful flush, they often place blush high on the cheeks, staying in the warm toned colours such as peach and coral.

And if you want to step it up a notch, why not try to add some freckles with brown eyeliner?

Pucker up

To balance out the colour residing on their eyes, Japanese women often use a pinkish glossy lipstick. Or if you feel like making a statement, go for a bold red or pink.

So if you’re in the mood to try out something new, the Japanese way might be the road to go. And best of all, it cuts down that previous makeup routine by a lot.
