Is too much technology bad for your skin?

Technology has made connecting with everyone anytime anywhere a whole lot easier. Although we discuss the impact of technology on our bodies, we rarely stop to think about the impacts that this could have on our skin. Luckily, Dr Howard Murad, of the Murad skincare line, has explained the unexpected the side effects of technology on our skin.

“We feel pressured to portray social media perfection at all times. We are more digitally connected than ever before, yet less connected to one another in meaningful ways. This has profound implications for our skin, health, and happiness,” Dr Murad said.

Once it’s laid plain like that, it’s scary how much impact technology has on our lives. Commuting and being online is something that we all do, because there’s nothing more boring than a train ride and avoiding eye contact with strangers. That’s why technology is so great. It allows us to avoid people in public without being obvious about it. Bliss.

However, Murad warns us against overusing technology.

“Consider, for example, that four days in front of a computer screen is the equivalent to 20 minutes in the midday sun on your skin. Or that stress can cause inflammation and cellular water loss, the final common pathway of ageing. The way we live our life, through technology, directly affects our skin and overall wellbeing.”

So sitting in front of a computer screen all day might not be the best thing for your skin. Who knew? Ageing is something that everyone wants to fight. So is stress. If you’re stressed out, you sweat, and if you’re sweating a lot, you’re losing a lot of water. Murad has some tips for staying hydrated in this stressful world we live in.

He suggests drinking more, eating more water rich veggies, like broccoli, and fruits, like pomegranates, and ensuring your body is hydrated. Mental health is important as well, so disconnecting from technology is important for your mind to process the day’s happenings.

Murad’s tips are things we all know we should do, but find difficult to implement in everyday life. Luckily, on his website, he has a few programs that could help you out. Check them out here.
