Newcastle – 24 hour Itinerary

The city of Newcastle is located 2 hours north of Sydney. It is filled with quirky cafes, coastal walks and friendly locals. Limited by time? Make a rough plan of how you will spend your time in Newcastle to ensure you take advantage of what Newcastle has to offer!

Soak up the Morning Sun

Holidays are a chance to step back from the bustle of everyday routines and enjoy what nature has to offer. If you are an early riser like myself you may choose to check out the sunrise from one of Newcastle’s most iconic locations.

Fort Scratchley is the ideal sunrise location. The former defence institution, has picturesque views of Newcastle harbour and Nobbys beach, making it the perfect place to catch the sunrise.

Breakfast

Start your day the right way, with a big ol’ mug of coffee and brekky of course.

Find the perfect spot for you:
For The Family- The Barn, Adamstown is a local favourite because of the friendly staff and welcoming space. Their wide variety of choices, keeps both the kids and adults happy! Some of their popular kids options include the fruit salad, pancakes and bacon & eggs all for under $12.

For The Coffee Lover- Nothing beats a warm cuppa in the morning. Check out Xtraction Espresso for their specialty coffee and street food. The cafe is located in Bolton street and is open from 5.30am, Monday through to Friday and 6am on a Saturday.

For The Sweet tooth- Table 1 Espresso, located in both Merewether and Warners Bay. The cafe was named Australia’s best cafe of the year in 2019.
Table 1 is famous for their signature pancake and waffle combinations. Treat yourself to a stack of your choice….you are on holidays after all.

Coastal Stroll

Newcastle is home to some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches, seize the opportunity to explore this amazing stretch of coastline with a walk.

I would recommend doing the Bathers Way Walk, It is roughly 6km and takes you from Merewether ocean baths all the way to Nobbys beach. However if you are limited by time, check out the Anzac Memorial Walk. It is a short 450m walk that gives you a taster of the beautiful coastal views, accompanied with some important Australian history.

Alternatively, If you prefer the shopping scene you can browse the boutique shops lined along Darby street.

Unwind

Watch the sun set along the Newcastle harbour at Honeysuckle Hotel. Indulge in some delicious cocktails and finger food whilst taking in the amazing waterfront views.

For Dinner

Seafood special at Scratchleys
Take in the picturesque views of Newcastle Harbour whilst enjoying some of the finest seafood in NSW.  Take a look at Scratchleys full menu here.

American foodie experience at Foghorn Brewery
Established in 2014, The Foghorn Brewery is located in a revised industrial warehouse in the heart of Newcastle. The beer at Foghorn comes straight from the tank to your glass, giving you an authentic brewery experience. The brewery serves a range of pub classics along with American style pizzas and burgers.
