It might only be November, but the New Year celebrations will soon be upon us. This is a time when we traditionally start thinking about the things we want in life, and we make resolutions on how to achieve them. Of course, many of those resolutions don’t often come to fruition, but we can try!
More and more people are choosing to leave their regular jobs and work from home, either as part of a large business, or as a freelancer. If you’ve always had aspirations to be your own boss and be able to travel whenever you want, could 2019 be the year you actually go for it?
Okay, I get it, it’s scary. Leaving a solid job isn’t something you should do without really thinking about the pros and cons very carefully. You also don’t have the same benefits as a self-employed person as you would working for a large company, e.g. pension, sick pay. Having said that, you get one thing which no other type of job can offer you – total freedom.
The Rise of The Digital Nomad
Year upon year, more people are choosing to live the digital nomad life in some guise. For some, this can be taking off and travelling on a long-term basis. For others, it can be dibbing in and out of the lifestyle, e.g. combining working from home with working away. It’s your choice, but building up a business beforehand is vital. It’s never a good idea to grab your laptop and head off into the horizon without actually establishing yourself first.
So, what types of jobs can you do nomadically, or at least freelance-wise?
Basically, if you have a skill, you can make cash from it. For this type of job, all you need is a laptop and a good quality Internet connection. How about these occupations?
- Writer
- Translator
- Proofreader
- Virtual assistant
- Photographer
- Transcriber/typist
- Dropshipping
- Online counsellor/life coach
- Online English teacher/ other in-demand languages
- Web designer
- SEO specialist
- Graphic designer
- E-book publisher
- Blogger, using affiliate marketing to boost your cashflow
Those are just a few suggestions, and there are many, many more besides.
All of these jobs allow you to work from wherever you like, whenever you like, and with you as your own boss. You can work through a freelancing website, such as Upwork, or you can try and build yourself up from scratch, it all depends on the type of job you’re going for.
Is it For You?
Does reading about all of this make you excited? Or does it make you terrified? It’s supposed to do both. Leaving a job and starting something new is meant to be terrifying, because it’s a huge life change, but with every year that passes, on the stroke of midnight, don’t we promise ourselves big changes? Maybe this year should be the year that you actually go for it and follow through on one of those resolutions? It could turn out to be the best thing you’ve ever done.
