If you’re thinking of heading off to one of the many European cities for a winter city break, you’re sure to have a great time. That festive feel, the high possibility of snow, a huge choice of places to go. Europe is fantastic no matter what the month, but winter has a special something about it. Of course, winter also means cold.
If you’re not sure how cold we’re talking, European winters can vary from mild, on the Mediterranean coastlines, to absolutely freezing, as you head towards Scandinavia and even England. It’s vital that you pack properly, wrap up warm, and remember sensible footwear! Another thing you need to bear in mind is the effect the cold can have on your skin. Just as the sun can dehydrate and burn your skin, the cold wind and low temperatures can dry it out and leave you looking less than your best. Thankfully, there are a few handy cheat tricks you can learn, to avoid skin damage.
Don’t Wash Your Face in Hot Water
When it’s freezing outside, all you want is to sit in a hot bath, or under a hot shower. Big mistake. Hot water can strip away the essential, protective oils from your skin. Instead, stick with lukewarm water, and avoid any harsh soaps or perfumed products.
Moisturiser is Key
It makes sense that if your skin is dry, you moisture it, but even if it doesn’t feel particularly dry yet, moisturising is key regardless. Moisturiser builds up a protective layer between the elements and your skin, so pick your moisturiser very carefully indeed, and make sure it matches your skin type. Make sure you go for natural moisturisers, as some have certain ingredients which can further dry out your skin during the cold months (e.g. petroleum hints).
Moisturise Straight After You Wash
By moisturising straight after you wash your face, applying it whilst your skin is still a little damp, you’re actually helping your skin lock in extra moisture. During the cold months, every bit of moisture is welcome!
You Still Need Sunscreen!
You might think this is a ridiculous considering it is far from double figures, but the sun can still burn your skin in the winter. Winter sunburn, on top of dry, wind-beaten skin, is not a good combination! To counteract that, wear a good quality sunscreen on your face whenever you head out.
Exfoliate Regularly
Dead skin cells shed quite rapidly during the cold months, as your skin is going to be drier, due to that cold wind. Counteract that by finding a high quality exfoliating product which suits your skin, and using it on a regular basis. Don’t over-exfoliate, and this can be worse than not exfoliating at all! Once a week should be sufficient.
Drink Plenty of Water
Just like in the summer months, hydration is key. You might not want to drink cold drinks when the temperatures are nearing zero, but you must make sure you drink enough water every day. This will not only keep your skin bright, but it will give you more energy for all that sightseeing too!
Avoid The Air Con Heating System
If you can, avoid putting on the air conditioning to heat the hotel room. This is only going to dry your skin out even more, and it could leave you with a sniffling nose at the same time. Of course, we’re not suggesting you should freeze, but if it’s not strictly necessary, don’t put it on.
Winter in Europe is a wonderful thing to experience. You might get a wonderfully mild winter trip, but if you are heading further north, the chances of snow and cold is much higher, especially as you enter into December and January. Protect your skin and enjoy your trip!
