Essential Oils have been gaining momentum as a popular form of stress relief, relaxation and aromatherapy. But how much do we know and understand about this growing trend?
In an exclusive, Living With Essential Oils answered all our questions.
What are they?
Essential Oils can be found in nature in the aromatic parts of plants; in the seeds, bark, stems, roots or flowers. The oils are most commonly extracted through a low-heat steam distillation process whereby “steam is circulated under pressure through plant material liberating the essential oils into the steam. As the steam mixture cools, the water and oils naturally separate and the oil is collected in its pure form.”
When should they be used?
The Oils have a range of applications and purposes. They can divided into three categories; Aromatic, Topical, and Internal.
Aromatic Oils have a range of functions. Diffusing soft, light floral scents like lavender is a great way to unwind as it creates an atmosphere of relaxation before going to sleep. Other aromatic oils aid in dispelling unwanted odours and generate a delightfully fragrant atmosphere.
Topical Oils moisturise and hydrate the skin leaving a blissfully aromatic and long-lasting scent. They can also be used for massages and as soothing agents to inflamed skin and scars.
Internal Oils are dietary supplements that help with a number of conditions and ailments. The oils are antioxidants, one that comes highly recommended is the Lemon Essential Oil which “breaks down toxins and cleanses the body.” Internal Oils taste best in a delicious morning detox drink.
