To most people, aqua socks are things generally reserved for going swimming at the beach or other aquatic adventures. However, Nike are going out on a limb to prove to us once again that there is no such thing as situational restriction when it comes to fashion.
Nike has already released their Aqua Sock 360, which effectively combines the design and sturdiness of a street shoe with the material properties of water shoes, being made up of two layers of breathable perforated mesh on the uppers, which also keeps the shoes light and practical. There is a foam heel clip to proudly display the famous logo and also add necessary padding, with a three-piece rubber sole to provide grip and malleability.
They have now re-released the shoe with colour variations in blue and black. This is admittedly not the most exotic palette to choose from, but it helps keep the feel of the aquatic inspiration intact to a certain degree.
More than anything, what Nike are demonstrating is that situational exclusivity in fashion is well and truly a thing of the past. The diversity in fashion relating to gender has been well documented in recent times, and this message is being translated into the realm of practicality and concepts considered unique to certain conditions.
They are also pointing out that something that provides comfort and practicality in one situation will probably be able to provide those things in others as well, even if the two situations differ. Recognising what makes fashion trends or items successful is a difficult, and Nike are showing us exactly how it’s done with this impressive addition to an already extensive collection of practical footwear.
