Fashion is a fascinating business, so it’s only fitting that some splendid insights into the fashion world have current and upcoming movie releases for this year. The fashion films are mostly in the style of documentaries, so they are sure to tantalise and fascinate the fashionistas and the rest of us mere mortals. As many of us don’t get front row seats at Fashion Week like most celebrities, actors, musicians and glitterati, these films are a ticket behind the scenes of this revered industry.
Straight/Curve
Straight/Curve Trailer from Jenny McQuaile on Vimeo.
Straight/Curve‘s trailer promises to be a fascinating debate about the need for more diversity in fashion and advertising. Plus sized models like Australia’s Ashley Greene are given a voice and celebrated as part of the future of the industry. An un-retouched billboard in Times Square thrills the model seen talking animately and with pride in the trailer. Award winning NYC Director/ Producer Jenny McQuale incites the viewer with a sense of urgency and duty to celebrate women of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds. The documentary examines body image and the fashion’s industry’s impact on self image. It challenges society’s unrealistic and dangerous standards of beauty and how the industry is changing.
The film will debut on EPIX on Wednesday June 21 at 8PM ET/PT, 7PM CT
Andrej(a)
The second film is a documentary that examines the life of Andreja Pejic, arguably one of the most contentious and well known models in the world. Her fame is due to her fairly public transgender reassignment process and her work as a model both before and after the procedure. This film suggests compelling viewing simply because not only is Andreja’s beauty is undeniable, but also because she was a trail blazer in both fashion and transgender issues. The film examines her life working as a model both before and after such significant surgery. A must see.
We Margiela
With a release date set for later in the year, We Margiela joins the docufashion trend with a look at Maison Martin Margiela. A cleverly designed marketing campaign has a group of Instagram followers receiving surprise pre-release “packages” much to the excitement of the 999 lucky disciples that got in line. Some of the tantalising tidbits will include excerpts from interview transcripts from the film and exclusive photos. The film even has its own website. You can also follow the film’s progress on the label’s dedicated Instagram account.
As Martin Margiela had such a reclusive design career, and has been so silent since he left the fashion stage 10 years ago, this will surely pique the interest of anyone interested in fashion or design.
Versace
And finally, a film to assuage the curiosity of so many who feel like Gianni Versace’s death acutely, such was his magnetism.
