It’s not difficult to find sportswear making a mark in the fashion world these days, with automobile-inspired threads in particular making something of a comeback.
Fronted by studios like Alyx and 250London, motorsport fashion is providing a retro option to both men and women that’s still practical for those into a motorised lifestyle as well as those that aren’t.
However, motorsport and automobile giants BMW have now released their own offering to the style with their Motorsport Heritage Collection. It takes the retro feel of motorsport fashion to a whole new level by putting us right back into the motoring heyday of the 1970s.
It features the simple colour schemes reminiscent of Formula One teams of old, as well as some seriously impressive moustaches to boot. The release shoot for the collection has a firm grounding in the trackside of race days, with smoke in the air and impressive engines to match the simple white with blue and red trimming on display.
With a range of T-shirts, paper jackets and accessories to choose from, this collection looks sure to be popular among both motor racing fans and the actively-minded amongst us. However, special mention has to be made of the BMW Motorsport Leather Jacket, which sits front and centre in the collection’s press attention. It seriously is smouldering.
It’s the kind of thing that makes you think of Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, and the prime history of Australians in Formula One motorsport. Those were the days when men were men, and they made no secret of their love for fast cars. The designs are generally simple, bold, and reminiscent in a certain way of old-fashioned masculinity. It’s a throwback to the days when men spent their weekends rebuilding vintage cars.
The marketing does a lot to help the collection as well by evoking images of the playboy lifestyle inherent to racing drivers of the day – the likes of James Hunt and Eddie Irvine spring to mind, and the attachment of an historic motor brand like BMW only enhances the attraction.
The collection has been launched along with a number of other sportswear ranges, including BMW Golfsport and BMW Yachtsport to cater to different purposes and lifestyles. The collection can be browsed at shop.bmw.com, along with BMW’s other recent sportswear ranges.
