These days makeup is all about creativity and expression. There are no rules or limitations to what you can and can’t do. Blue lipsticks have slowly become the norm and applying chunks of glitter to your cheekbones is just a part of everyday life. With makeup’s massive popularity increase over the last few years, many have taken to using the art in order to express their moods or to portray a particular feeling. If you’re feeling unsure about how you can express your mood through makeup, here are a few tips to get you on the right path. Happy blending!
It’s all in the lips.
If you’re like me, someone with more lipsticks than necessary, trying to choose a lipstick on the daily becomes a task full of decisions and uncertainty. When in doubt, look to your mood. If you’re feeling confident go for a bold colour like red or orange, something people will be able to see from a mile away. If you want to make a statement, go nuts and pick the weirdest and wildest colour you own. We’re talking blues, purples or even greens, yes they exist and I have two. If you want to keep the mood casual, opt for your best nude or neutral shade.
Eyeliner.
Over the years I’ve found that eyeliner isn’t always a necessity for your makeup look. In order to look and feel fresh, staying clear of black eyeliner on your waterline will result in a more natural look. If you’re feeling the ‘sweetheart’ or flirty vibe, using nude or white in your waterline gives the illusion of large, ‘doe-like’ eyes. To express feelings of anger or edginess, using black eyeliner will help you achieve that dramatic flair or badass vibe you’re looking for.
All about that contour.
Contouring and bronzing have become a worldwide phenomenon and we’re not complaining about it. Contouring can give the shape of your face more definition and if you do it right, can temporarily alter the shape of your facial features. If you feel like you want to give off that vampy, ‘don’t mess with me’ vibe, deeply chisel out those cheekbones with a dark contour shade. Bare in mind to accommodate your contour shade to your skin tone to avoid looking ‘muddy’. If you’re feeling gentle and soft, skip the contour altogether and instead focus on highlighting your cheeks with your favourite pale pink, shimmery blush.
Eyeshadow.
They say that eyes are the window to the soul and in the world of makeup, eyeshadow is everything. Use your choice of eyeshadow shades as an opportunity to provide a sneak peek into how you’re feeling. Soft pinks or brown neutrals can mean feelings of joy, femininity or general content about the day ahead. If you’re prepared for the stares and you’re feeling like a bad ass, deep purples, berry tones and maroons are the way to go.
Brows.
There’s no shame in admitting you put extra care into maintaining your eyebrows. Brows are said to be the key to framing the face as they naturally contour the face as well as highlight our best features. Your brows can not only assist in defining your face, but your mood too. If you’re feeling sharp, alert or generally on point, clearly define your brows at its edges by either using a brush and pomade or a sharpened brow pencil. To keep the mood cool and calm, fill in your brow’s centre and tail while using a light hand, leaving the front of the brow almost bare. Shaping your brows also play a crucial part here as lifting your brow’s arch through tweezing and combing will help if you’re feeling strong and ready to make a statement, while lowering the arch will convey your feelings of general simplicity.
