THE HUMAN TRIAL, directed by Lisa Hepner, is a new documentary film that provides unprecedented, real-time access to a radical stem cell treatment that could save millions of lives in Australia? It’s been described as the “other pandemic” – yet very few people know that 1.5 million Australians (about 5.5% of the population) currently live with diabetes, according to data from Diabetes Australia. On top of this, the Western Pacific Region, which includes Australia, has the highest number of deaths from diabetes, which killed 2.3 million people in 2021, according to the International Diabetes Association.

THE HUMAN TRIAL shines a light on this stigmatized disease. In 2011, filmmakers Lisa Hepner and her husband, cinematographer Guy Mossman, set out to learn why this deadly disease hasn’t been cured. Driven by the desire to cure her own type 1 diabetes, Lisa was given unprecedented, real-time access to a clinical trial – only the sixth-ever embryonic stem cell trial in the world. The film was shot in Riyadh, Tokyo, Berlin, Toronto and across the U.S. The history-making trial promises to be the breakthrough that millions have been waiting for since insulin was discovered 100 years ago.
