How to Beat The New Year Blues

How to Beat The New Year Blues

Not everyone loves New Year, and even if you’re someone who is full of beans on New Year’s Eve, you’re likely to suffer a comedown of some kind after 1 January rolls around. Whether you’re basking in sunshine, or you’re off somewhere cold and grey, the New Year blues are a very real thing.

Of course, there are many ways to beat these blues and give yourself a happy and bright start to a brand new calendar year. Let’s check out some of the most common, to help you enter a fresh year with a positive outlook. Let’s start the way we mean to go on!

Avoid Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are not something you need in your life. Yes, they motivate you, but most of us fail by the second day and it leaves us feeling less than positive. The best advice is to avoid these ridiculous resolutions to change your entire life, and to simply promise that you’ll do the best you can throughout the year. Everyone can manage that, right?

The most common resolutions are to stop smoking, stop drinking, or to lose weight. Whilst these are all healthy things to incorporate into your life, they’re unachievable overnight, and when you give in to temptation, you simply beat yourself up. Avoid that feeling of failure and instead focus on bettering yourself from the inside out.

Plan Some Travel Trips

Giving yourself something to look forward to is the single best way to avoid those New Year blues! Why not grab a world map and decide where you’re going to go this year? And then, work out a budget and make it happen! If you want to spend the following New Year in NYC, save up and go for it! As soon as you can afford that flight, book it, and work the rest out over the coming months. If you want to go on safari in Kenya, get saving and make it happen.

Planning something exciting is the best way to get over the night before come down, and the feelings of positivity will grow.

Be Kind to Yourself

We’ve talked about avoiding resolutions, because they simply make you feel terrible if you have a slight mishap, so instead, why not focus on your health? We’re talking about mental health as much as physical health, and this means being kind to yourself. Throw out self-deprecating talk, and instead tell yourself how great you are, every single day. Come up with a mantra, practice affirmations, and give your confidence a boost. This is the single best way to start the year. Kindness is the way forward.

Do Something New Every Single Day

Challenge yourself to do something new every single day. This can be something as small as trying a new type of coffee in the morning, learning a new dish to cook, or bungee jumping, whatever you want it to be! Doing something new on a regular basis keeps life exciting, keeps us challenged, and pushes us to do more. When you realise you’re capable of more than you ever thought, you’ll notice that you continue to challenge yourself towards greater things. Confidence is on the rise and life is good!

These are just a few ways you can banish those New Year blues. Look after your mind and body, give yourself something to work towards, and tell yourself how great you are. If you can do all that, you’ll certainly have a fantastic and positive 12 months ahead.
