Summer wedding secrets

Having your big day in the summertime means fresh air, avoiding painful rain showers that could ruin your hair and of course good lighting for photos. However, we shouldn’t forget that it’s also important to prepare for the inconveniences that heat can bring. Try taking these summer wedding tips on board to avoid being left sweaty and irritated.

Chill out

When it’s hotter, our bodies get tired more easily. Keep in mind that having your wedding on a summer day can exhaust you and your guests more quickly than in cooler months. It’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day. Provide your guests with some cold beverages because you don’t want anyone fainting, that is, except your future husband at the sight of how drop dead gorgeous you look (but still, you probably wouldn’t want that happening either).

Humidity-proof your hair

Whether you’re the bride or attending a wedding, you want to make sure you do this before you leave the house. Set a reminder, stick a note on your car, do whatever it takes to remind yourself of this very important getting ready step. The last thing you want is for your hair to go from Lauren Conrad locks to an Edward Scissorhands mess. Believe us, the heat can do that to you. It’s best to take precautions, so add a little (or a lot) of hairspray. There’s also a range of anti-frizz and moisture-resistant products that you won’t regret adding to your hair.

Setting Spray

Ever heard the saying ‘Setting spray saves the day’? Well, now you have. You’re welcome. Please don’t make the mistake of thinking your makeup look is finished without setting spray. On a hot day it won’t stay like that for long if it isn’t set. A good setting spray will work wonders to give you a long-lasting matte finish so your makeup is flawless rather than dripping down your face, along with the tears as you realise what your makeup looks like.

Bye Bye Bugs

The heat likes to bring out some very irritating insects like flies and mosquitoes. Especially if you’re having an outside wedding, you don’t want these unwelcome creatures to ruin your day. Play it safe by applying some mosquito repellent so you aren’t left with itchy lumps. You can incorporate citronella candles into the wedding decorations to really encourage those bothersome bugs to back off.

Programs or Paper fans?

We’re all guilty of waving the trusty wedding program to cool ourselves down, so why not make it easier for your guests by doubling them as a fan? You can easily achieve this by adding a popsicle-like stick to the end of the paper so that on a hot summer’s day your friends and family aren’t drenched in sweat. It’s also handy to keep some blotting papers in your clutch so you can freshen up without affecting your makeup.

Slip Slop Slap

We’ve heard this one a thousand times as a child during family days at the beach and school excursions but the same goes for summer weddings. Love may be in the air but unfortunately it won’t shield you from the dangerous UV rays. Whether you’re the bride or the guest, apply some sunscreen to you don’t end up getting sunburnt. Some ceremonies can go for a while so your skin can be exposed to the sun for a long period of time. You’ll be kicking yourself when the professional photos finally get uploaded to Facebook and you’re looking as red as a tomato.

Deo for your B.O.

A small deodorant in your clutch can go a long way. Not much worse than feeling sticky and sweaty and not being able to do anything about it. We sweat way more on warmer days so occasionally applying some deodorant can reduce our pits from perspiring like crazy. Putting on some perfume can also make us feel a lot more fresh, beautiful and a lot less insecure about someone’s aunt sniffing us and thinking “ew”.

Cocktails

We could really leave this at ‘enough said’ but we could also write an essay on why these are a good idea. A refreshing cocktail at a wedding is the way to go for some yummy and attractive wedding drinks. They can be customised to suit you and your guests and they have a bright, summer feel about them. You can come up with some clever names to add a funny or personal touch for you and your groom. They will also be very Instagrammable, which is basically all the matters…right?
This list could really go on, but these are our top tips for a successful summer wedding. Getting married in summer is absolutely beautiful, so plan ahead and make the most of the sunshine.
