How to store your makeup while travelling

Packing or travelling ‘light’ has never been apart of my vocabulary and with my ever rising makeup collection, things can start to become a little more difficult when it’s time to travel. While we all love to look flawless when going overseas, even if it is just for a long weekend, sacrifices must be made. If you often find yourself stuck in a rut when it comes to packing or storing your makeup pre-travel, don’t fret, because we’ve got you covered. Here’s our staple check list when it comes to packing and storing your makeup before your next getaway.

Assess the necessity of high end products.

This is where that ‘sacrifice’ I mentioned earlier comes into play. As a self diagnosed makeup junkie, indulging in high end makeup is one of my favourite (and pricey) pastimes. However, when it comes to travelling, it may be best to leave the pricey stuff at home. Temporarily, make the switch to drug store products to avoid the heavy disappointment of destroyed high end products. But if you simply cannot resist bringing along your favourite high end foundation, take the extra time to thoroughly wrap it up to prevent any disasters. Plus, makeup can be found all over the world, so take the chance and explore what the unknown has to offer.

Less is more.

Travelling is the perfect time to take up the practise that is minimalism. Go through your entire makeup collection and select products you know you’ll use while overseas. Limit yourself to four eyeshadows that’ll go with anything (think neutrals), your go-to blush, contour and bronzer, plus your ride-or-die lipstick. Investing in a solid tinted lip balm or gloss may also be a good idea, depending on where it is your travelling to. Your makeup brushes apply here too, only take the ones you know you’ll need. Also, if you don’t have any glam nights planned for your trip, skip the foundation and instead bring along your favourite BB or CC cream. This tip will also come in handy if you’re hitting up somewhere tropical.

Makeup brushes, meet plastic bag.

Because what would we be without our tools? To avoid any chance of dirt, dust or bacteria clinging to your makeup brushes (which could then cling to your skin), place your selected bunch in a plastic bag to form your very own brush guard.

Samples are a girl’s best friend.

These days, you can get a sample or travel sized item for everything. Your chosen samples will now become your ally, especially if your trip is just a simple weekend away. This tip is not only limited to your makeup, almost your entire skin care routine can be ‘samplified’ or exist in a travel size form. Stores like Priceline, Chemist Warehouse and even Coles can help you here. Mecca Maxima and Sephora also stock selected travel sized makeup items that can make your suitcase a whole lot lighter.

Safety always comes first.

To ensure absolutely no damage, aim to pack your makeup as tightly as possible. Wrap your makeup in thick pieces of clothing, while stuffing cotton balls or pads in compact rounds like your blushes, powders and bronzers. For the added padding, stuff socks around the bag’s walls to guarantee yourself the piece of mind that your makeup isn’t flying around while in your bag throughout your flight.
